PODCAST with LawEnforcementToday.com and Erika Unberhagen (July 15, 2020)

Check out the LawEnforcementToday.com interview with our very own Erika Unberhagen (LMSW, LCDC):

“PTSD From Police Work Led Her To Homelessness & Alcoholism. Her Recovery And Mission To Help Others”

From LawEnforcementToday.com:

“Erika Unberhagen is our guest. She is a former law enforcement officer. Erika’s career as a police officer led to PTSD, which in turn led to increased drinking of alcohol to cope with the symptoms. As her overall condition worsened, she lost her job as a cop, lost her marriage and eventually became homeless for years. Erika talks about what led to her condition, the years of struggling for recovery and how she eventually got sober. Her mission now is to help other law enforcement, first responders and military recover from PTSD and Substance Abuse issues.“

Stars and Stripes (Oct 19, 2018) – Chris Stricklin quoted and Warriors Heart Foundation mention Assassins threaten multibillion-dollar US efforts to keep Afghan airmen flying

The U.S. is attempting to build an Afghan air force that doesn’t need foreign help, but it is difficult to do in the middle of a war, said retired Air Force Col. Chris Stricklin, former commander of Train Advise Assist Command-Air.

“The mission is not just to train pilots, it is to develop a sustainable and effective air force,” said

Stricklin, who was commander during the first Afghan-led C-130 flight.

One “choke point” is a lack of language proficiency, said Stricklin, a board member of the nonprofit Operation Warriors Heart Foundation. Technical manuals require English literacy, and a new plan to consolidate English language training has been hobbled by poor security at AAF training facilities, according to a June Pentagon report on security and stability in Afghanistan.

“In addition, the PTSD causes we are all familiar with include military combat, terrorist attacks and violent personal assaults such as sexual assault, mugging, or robbery,” says Vonnie Nealon, clinical director of Warriors Heart, an accredited treatment program for military, veterans and first responders, in Bandera, Texas.

While PTSD often manifests as a reliving of a traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks, some people are affected more than others. “Some individuals may experience feelings of isolation, irritability, and guilt, and have difficulty sleeping and concentrating,” Nealon says.

Myth: PTSD affects only people in the military.

Many people link PTSD to the aftermath of soldiers being in war. In reality, the mental health condition can stem from any distressing event, including natural disasters, serious road accidents, terrorist attacks, sexual assault and mass shootings, explained Vonnie Nealon, the clinical director at Warriors Heart, a PTSD and addiction treatment center in Bandera, Texas, for military veterans and first responders. PTSD can also occur after a serious or life-threatening health issue.
