Nina Powell-Fogg
Massage Therapist
Nina grew up in Alps, Virginia and attended both private and public schools in Caroline County. She and her husband have made Byrd’s Mill, south of Central Point, Virginia, their home for over 35 years. She has two grown children, three cats, and two bad-to-the-bone basset hounds. Nina began her career in health care as a licensed practical nurse working in respiratory care . It is there that she learned the true devastation of alcohol related motor vehicle accidents. If she draws it to memory, she can still smell the alcohol, see the blood, and even smell the blood. When working in respiratory care, she obtained certification as a certified respiratory technician. Next, Nina returned to higher education to obtain her degree in registered nursing. As an RN, she worked as a staff nurse on the medical floor. Part of the patient population was alcohol withdrawal and detox. There were a lot of lessons she learned about alcoholism as a disease. From working in these areas and growing up in alcoholism, she is often reminded of a song written by Kris Kristofferson and made famous by Johnny Cash called Sunday Morning Coming Down. This isn’t a song just about a hangover- there are many inferences. The character is not just thinking about getting stoned; it’s the beauty of the things he is seeing while he is sober. Nina transitioned from nursing to massage therapy about 11 years ago. She is Board-Certified in Massage Therapy and Bodywork also holding a Virginia license. She is also a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA).
My Why:
My why for Warriors Heart is that I believe people heal by being heard and positive human touch. The land and the location here are a healing place. If I can help just one veteran or more reconnect with their sense of self and find calmness, my job will be complete. We owe our Veterans and First Responders so much!
